Bolting, torquing & cold cutting

We tighten flanged joints in a controlled sequence to the specified torque, and cut pipework cold where hot work is not permitted.

Overview

Bolting, torquing and cold cutting services are part of the activity scope on TMI's ISO 14001:2015 certificate.

A flanged joint seals only when its bolts are tightened evenly, in the right sequence, to the right load. Cold cutting removes the ignition risk of hot cutting on live plant.

Scope of work

  • Bolting of flanged joints
  • Controlled torquing to specified values
  • Cold cutting of pipework

Typical applications

  • Flange make-up after valve or equipment reinstatement
  • Shutdown joint breaking and remaking
  • Pipe cutting in areas where hot work is restricted

Common questions

Why does bolt tightening sequence matter?

Tightening bolts in a cross pattern loads the gasket evenly. Tightening them one after another round the flange can leave the joint unevenly compressed and prone to leaks.

What is cold cutting?

Cold cutting cuts pipe or plate mechanically, without flame or sparks, so it can be used where hot work is restricted.
